Generate and curate environmental, social, and economic datasets for China from satellite remote sensing, numerical models, in-situ measurements, and administrative statistics
Produce value-added, integrated grid products using advanced statistical, physical, and AI-based methods

Provide Analysis Ready Data (ARD)
Standardize datasets with consistent spatial reference systems, temporal frameworks, and formats
Ensure comprehensive metadata, quality flags, and uncertainty information to support robust, reproducible analysis

Improve accessibility and usability
Offer open and user-friendly data access for researchers, policymakers, NGOs, the private sector, and international users
Reduce technical barriers through clear documentation, tutorials, and tools for data visualization and analysis
4.
Support interdisciplinary research on China’s development
Serve as a core data platform for the International Research Center for China Development Studies (ICCDS) at HKU
Facilitate cross-disciplinary research on climate change, land use, urbanization, inequality, resource management, and sustainable development
5.
Enhance education and training in geospatial data science
Support the MSc in Geospatial Data Science (GeoDS) and the Second Major/Minor in Geospatial Data Science
Provide real-world datasets and case studies for courses in remote sensing, GIS, artificial intelligence, and geospatial data analysis
Offer training materials, practical exercises, and project opportunities that integrate CSIO data products into undergraduate and postgraduate curricula
6.
Promote standards, best practices, and international visibility
Align with international standards for Earth observation, ARD, and geospatial data management
Contribute to global discussions on sustainability data, remote sensing applications, and open science
Strengthen HKU’s role as a global leader in Geography and Remote Sensing by showcasing high-impact data products and scientific outputs
